Product Designer interview question

How do you prioritise design work?

Prioritize design work by user harm and opportunity, strategic outcome, evidence, reach, dependency and effort; address accessibility and severe usability risks first, expose uncertainty, and reserve capacity for validation and system debt.

Direct answer

What a strong answer covers

How it works

Design work is prioritised by the harm it prevents and the opportunity it unlocks. Accessibility failures and usability problems that block core tasks come first because they exclude people and cost trust. After that, work is ranked by contribution to the strategic outcome, the evidence behind the expected effect, how many users it reaches, dependencies on other teams, and effort. Uncertainty is stated rather than hidden, and capacity is reserved for research and validation so the roadmap is not only delivery. The list is visible to product and engineering so trade-offs are shared decisions.

Example

A design team with three designers and twenty requests ranked them: an accessibility audit finding that the main navigation was unusable by screen reader was first; the checkout friction tied to the quarter’s revenue outcome with usability evidence was second; a visual refresh requested by marketing with no evidence of user impact was deferred with a note to gather data. Twenty percent of the quarter was held for discovery on the next outcome.

Common mistakes

  • Prioritising by who asked most recently or most loudly.
  • Leaving accessibility defects behind new features.
  • Filling every hour with delivery and never validating anything.
