How it works
An ML pipeline has the attack surface of a software pipeline plus a few of its own. Training data is accessed with least privilege and its sources are trusted and checked, because poisoned rows shift model behaviour silently. Training runs in isolated environments with pinned, scanned dependencies, since a malicious package can exfiltrate data. Model artifacts are signed and stored in a registry with access control, so a swapped model cannot reach production. At serving, inputs are validated and rate-limited to slow model extraction and adversarial probing, and the model endpoint is authorised like any other API. Lineage from data to deployed model is auditable.

A recommendation team found that a scraped review dataset could be seeded by competitors; they added a data validation step that rejects sudden bursts from a single source and a canary evaluation on a curated golden set before every promotion. Model files are signed with Sigstore in CI, the serving container verifies the signature at startup, and the inference API sits behind the same OAuth gateway as the rest of the platform.
