Information Security Engineer interview question

How do you manage vulnerabilities?

Inventory assets, continuously discover vulnerabilities, validate exposure and exploitability, prioritize by business context, set remediation SLAs, patch or mitigate safely, verify closure, manage exceptions, and measure recurrence.

What a strong answer covers

How it works

Vulnerability management is a continuous loop, not an annual scan. It starts from an asset inventory, because unknown systems are never patched. Scanners and dependency tools discover vulnerabilities across hosts, containers, code, and cloud configuration. Each finding is validated: is the vulnerable component actually reachable, is the exploit practical, is there a compensating control. Prioritisation combines exploitability data such as known-exploited lists with business context such as internet exposure and data sensitivity, and remediation SLAs are set by that priority. Fixes are deployed through the normal pipeline with rollback, closure is verified by rescanning, exceptions have expiry dates, and recurrence metrics show whether the root causes are being fixed.

Example

A critical finding in an image-processing library was rated by CVSS as 9.8, but validation showed the vulnerable function was only reachable through an internal admin tool behind VPN; it was scheduled within the 7-day SLA rather than treated as an emergency. The same week a medium-rated SSRF in an internet-facing service was escalated because the known-exploited list showed active abuse, and it was patched in a day.

Common mistakes

  • Treating CVSS score as the priority without exposure context.
  • Scanning without an inventory and missing the servers nobody remembers.
  • Closing findings on the ticket without a rescan to confirm.
