Frontend Developer interview question

What is your frontend testing strategy?

Test behaviour at the right level: unit tests for pure logic, component tests for interaction and accessibility, and a small end-to-end set for critical journeys. Prefer user-visible assertions over implementation details.

Direct answer

What a strong answer covers

How it works

The strategy allocates tests by what they can catch cheaply. Pure functions and reducers get unit tests. Components get tests that render them, interact through accessible queries, and assert on what the user sees, which also enforces accessible markup. A handful of end-to-end tests cover the flows that make money or lose users. Visual regression and contract tests against the API fill specific gaps. The suite is judged by how often it catches real regressions relative to how often it breaks for cosmetic reasons.

Example

A form test should fill fields, submit, and assert the visible success or validation message instead of checking internal state setters. The checkout flow gets one end-to-end test through a real browser with a stubbed payment provider, while the forty pricing permutations are covered by unit tests on the pricing function.

Common mistakes

  • Asserting on component internals or class names so any refactor breaks the test.
  • Mocking so much that the test passes while the real integration is broken.
  • Running every scenario end to end and ending up with a slow, flaky suite nobody trusts.
